The European Commission has approved €91 million in funding for Finland to support nine national transport projects, the Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed on Tuesday.
The largest share, over €42 million, will be used to acquire a new icebreaker to ensure year-round maritime access through the Baltic Sea. The vessel is expected to support commercial shipping and enhance logistical security.
The second-largest allocation, around €12 million, will fund upgrades to National Road 21 in northern Lapland, between Palojoensuu and Kilpisjärvi. The route is key for both civilian access and military logistics in the remote Arctic region.
Lulu Ranne, Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications, said the funding package reinforces national preparedness. “The EU funding strengthens Finland’s security of supply, military mobility and smooth foreign trade,” she said in a statement.
