Four people were injured in a stabbing incident near the Ratina shopping centre in Tampere on Thursday afternoon. Police arrested one suspect at the scene. No fatalities have been reported.

The attack occurred around 4:23pm in the area between Ratina Square and the city’s main bus station. Eyewitness accounts and visible bloodstains suggest that the victims were attacked at different locations across the site. Emergency services administered first aid at the scene.

According to police, the motive does not appear to be terrorist or racist. Authorities have not disclosed any further details about the suspect or potential reasons behind the attack.

The arrest was swift. Eyewitnesses inside a nearby pub, John Scott’s, reported seeing a man covered in blood being chased by another man dressed in a grey hoodie. Police intervened in front of the pub, subduing the suspect without resistance.

“After seeing the police, he calmly raised his hands and lay down on the ground,” said Oki Lindgrén, who witnessed the arrest from inside the pub.

Another eyewitness, Oona Simpanen, described seeing a woman lying on the ground behind the bus station, with another woman attempting resuscitation. Simpanen also noted that ambulances had difficulty reaching the scene due to traffic congestion.

Blood was visible across several locations. A large pool was seen outside the Tampinkoski restaurant, while trails stretched along Vuolteenkatu and towards Ratina Square. Paper towels and other signs of emergency aid were scattered between bicycle racks and a nearby children’s play area.

Police cordoned off the area between the shopping centre and the bus station shortly after arriving. By 6pm, they had lifted the restrictions and concluded that the situation posed no further risk to the public.

Authorities have interviewed witnesses and asked anyone with information to come forward. Loudspeaker announcements inside the shopping centre called on eyewitnesses to report to the second floor for questioning.

While the shopping centre interior remained calm, the atmosphere outside was tense. Crisis support personnel were dispatched to the area, and bystanders expressed concern for their safety. Several ambulances and police vehicles remained at the site into the evening.

No information has yet been released about whether the attack was premeditated or random. The condition of the victims has not been detailed.

The incident has received international attention. Major media outlets including The Washington Post, The Independent, Aftonbladet, Expressen, and Xinhua have reported on the stabbing. Global news agencies Reuters, AP, and AFP have also covered the event.
