Finland’s unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in the second quarter of 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percentage points, according to data published by Statistics Finland.
The Labour Force Survey recorded an average of 297,000 unemployed persons from April to June, which is 27,000 more than during the same period in 2024. The unemployment rate for the second quarter last year was 9.3 percent.
At the same time, the number of employed persons declined. During the three-month period, there were 14,000 fewer people in work compared to a year earlier. On average, just over 2.6 million people were employed, with the statistical margin of error reported at ±18,000.
The total number of hours worked fell by just over two percent.
Statistics Finland attributed most of the decline in employment to job losses in female-dominated sectors. The number of employed women dropped by 18,000 year-on-year, while the number of employed men rose by 5,000.
The largest fall in employment occurred in wholesale and retail trade. By contrast, employment in the construction sector showed the most notable growth during the same period.
The data reflect a broader shift in the labour market, with services and trade sectors showing signs of contraction while some manual industries appear to be stabilising.
