A 15-year-old girl has died following a traffic accident involving an electric scooter and a car in Pirkkala, police confirmed on Tuesday.

The girl was operating the electric scooter with another 15-year-old girl riding as a passenger. Both were injured after colliding with a passenger car at a pedestrian crossing on Sunday. The crash occurred at the junction of Naistenmatkantie and Pirjolantie.

The girl who was driving the scooter died from her injuries on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Central Finland Police Department. The second girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police suspect both the deceased scooter driver and the motorist of separate traffic offences. The car driver is under investigation for endangering traffic safety, causing death, and causing injury. The key focus is whether the driver fulfilled the obligation of special caution required by Finnish traffic law when approaching a pedestrian crossing.

The police are also investigating the actions of the scooter driver, who is suspected of endangering traffic safety by entering the pedestrian crossing against traffic regulations.

“There is a legal duty on all vehicle operators to exercise heightened caution when nearing a crossing. This applies equally to motorists and electric scooter users,” the police said in their official bulletin.

No alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the incident.

Emergency services responded to the crash shortly after it occurred on 20 July. Both girls were transported to hospital, where the driver later died from her injuries.

Investigators have not disclosed further details about the sequence of events or the identities of those involved. The investigation is ongoing.
