Finland’s spell of early summer warmth has ended as rain and colder air return, bringing snow in some areas and pushing typical terrace weather out of reach for the remainder of May.

Meteorologists report that several rain fronts will move across the country in the coming days, reversing last week’s brief period of summer-like temperatures. According to Anne Borgström of Yle, conditions will vary by region, but the overall trend points to wet and cool weather.

On Wednesday, parts of eastern Lapland saw up to five centimetres of snow. “It’s clearly colder than usual for the time of year,” Borgström said. “In Lapland, the average for this time of May should be around 10 to 15 degrees, but tomorrow it will be closer to five.”

Rain is expected to continue across much of the country. On Thursday, Lapland will see drier conditions, but a new rain front will rise from the southwest. Western coastal regions, including Ostrobothnia, are forecast to be wet and chilly. In the south, cloud cover will shift throughout the day, and scattered showers are likely.

Southern Finland will see daytime highs of around 17 degrees on Thursday, but these are the week’s peak temperatures. In the north, colder air will keep values well below seasonal norms.

Friday is expected to be the wettest day of the week for most of Finland, except for Lapland, where sunshine and warmer air will bring a temporary break in the pattern. Temperatures in the north may climb to 15 degrees in some locations.

On Saturday, another front is forecast to bring rain to the southeast and eastern parts of the country. Borgström said that current models suggest heavy rain will focus on eastern Finland, continuing the unsettled pattern.

No significant warming is in sight. The 20-degree mark, reached earlier in May, now appears unlikely to return this week.
