Private parking enforcement plays a significant role outside regular working hours. Statistics from ParkkiPate for 2024 show that over one-third of private parking fines are issued in the evening and night.

Between 5 pm and 10 pm, enforcement officers issued 30% of all parking fines. During the night, from 10 pm to 6 am, an additional 4% of fines were given.

Christian Metsäranta, CEO of ParkkiPate, emphasised the need for private enforcement. “Our statistics show that private parking control is necessary. Parking areas remain busy outside office hours, and incorrect parking at night can pose a greater safety risk than during the day. Parking rules must be followed regardless of the time,” he said.

Vantaa recorded the highest share of night-time parking violations, with 25% of fines issued between 10 pm and 6 am. Tampere followed with 19%, while Helsinki accounted for 18%.

“Vantaa’s high share may be due to the number of shift workers driving at night, while residents also need parking. Tampere and Helsinki follow closely, showing that major cities require enforcement throughout the night,” Metsäranta said.

Helsinki led the evening parking fine statistics, with 20% of fines issued between 5 pm and 10 pm. Vantaa accounted for 10%, and Espoo 9%.

Although Vantaa had the most fines at night, the overall statistics showed a different pattern. Across all hours, Helsinki led with 22% of fines, while Vantaa’s total share was 10%.

“The distribution of fines reflects different traffic patterns. In smaller cities, traffic slows down in the evening, but in the capital region, shops, restaurants, and events keep the streets busy late into the night,” Metsäranta explained.
