Finnish Customs suspects the managing director of a nuclear power plant construction company of attempting to export sanction-restricted archive material to Russia.
The Economic Crime Investigation Unit launched a preliminary investigation after Customs officials flagged irregularities during a routine inspection. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs later issued a statement that contributed to the opening of the case.
The material in question was stored in a warehouse in Kymenlaakso. Authorities seized nearly 30 boxes of archived documents related to a Finnish nuclear power project. Based on findings from the investigation, some of the material falls under sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia.
The case is being investigated as a regulation offence. EU goods sanctions prohibit the export of specific items and information to Russia, and Finnish companies are required to ensure compliance.
The preliminary investigation has now reached its final stages. Finnish Customs plans to forward the case for consideration of charges in the near future.
