Helsinki is launching a new discounted pass for indoor sports facilities, offering lower-cost access on weekdays between 11:00 and 15:00. The pass will be available for purchase from 1 April 2025.
Paavo Arhinmäki, Helsinki’s deputy mayor for culture and leisure, said the initiative aims to encourage physical activity and make facilities more accessible.
“We want to lower the threshold for people to engage in exercise. The city had to revise the criteria for the special swimming card due to decisions by the equality and non-discrimination board. This led us to consider how pricing could meet different needs. This new option is intended to help groups such as pensioners, long-term patients, students, and families with young children,” he said.
The pass covers access to Helsinki’s municipal swimming halls, gym and weight training facilities, and public sessions at sports halls. Users must check in between 11:00 and 15:00, after which they can stay for two hours. The pass is not valid outside these hours or on weekends.
The cost is €60 for six months or €100 for twelve months. Each user is allowed one entry per day. The pass is personal and is loaded onto Helsinki’s sports service customer card, which costs €4. Existing cards can be used without additional charges.
Tuuli Salospohja, head of activation services at Helsinki’s sports department, said the pricing change is expected to increase the use of sports facilities during off-peak hours.
“A lower daytime price makes indoor sports more accessible. This is a useful benefit for people of all ages and fitness levels who can exercise flexibly during the day. We are taking a step towards promoting physical activity and improving the efficiency of our facilities,” she said.
The pass grants access to municipal swimming pools, excluding Jakomäki Swimming Hall and the second floor of Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall. It is also valid at fitness and weight training rooms in locations such as Töölö Sports Hall, Kontula Gym, and Liikuntamylly. However, it does not include access to outdoor pools, private sports centres, or certain other facilities.
