The office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman has received six complaints regarding the appointment of Oliver Stubb, the son of President Alexander Stubb, to an internship at the Finnish Institute for International Affairs (FIIA), Finnish newspaper Iltalehti reported on Monday.

Fifty-nine candidates applied for the post, with five selected for interviews. The institute ultimately chose 21-year-old Oliver Stubb. The decision has drawn criticism over fairness and transparency.

Emeritus Professor Seppo Koskinen, a legal expert in employment law, said last week the selection process raised concerns. “Looking from the outside, this does not look good,” he told Yle.

Documents reported by Ilta-Sanomat indicated that other interviewed candidates were further along in their academic careers and had relevant work experience in international affairs. The institute has declined to publish full documentation on the recruitment, citing privacy protections.

The internship is part of a research programme focused on Finnish foreign policy, northern European security and Nato. Oliver Stubb has already started the internship.

It remains unclear whether the Ombudsman will handle the matter or forward the complaints to the Justice Chancellor.
