Two 15-year-old girls died on Saturday evening after falling from the roof of a building in the Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki, according to police.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Karibiankatu at approximately 21:00. Paramedics attempted resuscitation, but both girls were pronounced dead at the scene.
The building, believed to be a six-storey parking facility, is located in a residential area near the western harbour. Authorities have not confirmed how the girls accessed the rooftop or what led to their fall.
A statement issued by Helsinki police on Sunday confirmed that no criminal activity is suspected. A case has been opened to determine the exact cause of death.
“There is no indication of a crime,” the statement said.
Police noted that several people were in the area at the time of the incident and are considered potential witnesses. Officers have appealed to anyone who may have seen the fall or events leading up to it to come forward.
Flowers and candles were placed near the site on Sunday morning as local residents gathered to pay their respects.
The City of Helsinki has activated its crisis support services. Residents can contact the 24-hour crisis hotline at 09 3104 4222 for assistance.
A police spokesperson told the Finnish News Agency STT that no further information would be released at this stage of the investigation, out of respect for the families involved.
