The Olkiluoto 1 nuclear reactor in western Finland was shut down on Thursday after plant operator Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) detected a turbine malfunction during a post-maintenance restart.
According to TVO, the fault was caused by damage to a pipe connected to the condenser in the turbine facility. The issue was discovered as the reactor was increasing output following its scheduled annual maintenance.
The shutdown was carried out as a precaution. TVO said on Friday that the fault does not pose any risk to nuclear safety and expects electricity production to resume overnight.
Located in Eurajoki, the Olkiluoto plant plays a critical role in Finland’s power grid. Together with its two other reactors, it produces nearly 30 percent of the country’s electricity.
Last year, nuclear power accounted for 39 percent of Finland’s total electricity consumption, according to figures from the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Disruptions at major facilities such as Olkiluoto can affect both supply stability and electricity prices.
