Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast to strike southern Finland by midday on Saturday, as high temperatures and humidity continue to build across the country, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Southern regions are expected to experience intense downpours and thunderstorms starting around noon. The storms could cause a sharp but temporary drop in temperature to around 20°C. In areas not affected by the storms, the heat is forecast to persist, with temperatures hovering near the 25°C mark.

The heatwave is strongest in central Finland, where Saturday temperatures could reach 30°C. Northern areas are expected to remain dry and relatively warm, with no significant rainfall predicted.

FMI has issued a heat warning for most of the southern half of Finland on Saturday. The warning will expand to nearly the entire country by Sunday, excluding only northernmost Lapland.

A separate warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for southern Finland. This alert is expected to extend to parts of central and western Finland during Sunday.

The weekend’s humid conditions will intensify the discomfort of the heat, especially in southern and central Finland.

Authorities warn that the expected rainfall could lead to localised flooding. According to a weekend water update from vesi.fi, river levels may rise in southern and southwestern regions. If rainfall exceeds forecasts, smaller rivers and streams could overflow onto fields and minor roads.

No major disruptions had been reported by midday Saturday. FMI continues to monitor the storm fronts developing in the south and advises residents to prepare for sudden changes in weather.
