Three Eurojackpot winners reveal surprising personal connection

The grand prize winners are invited to Veikkaus’ head office to celebrate their win over the traditional winner’s coffee.

Three Finnish players who each won over €500,000 in last Friday’s Eurojackpot draw have revealed an unexpected connection: they all know each other and used to play the same numbers together.

The winning tickets came from three separate locations, online players from Riihimäki and Nurmijärvi, and a customer who submitted their entry at a supermarket in Espoo. The odds-defying coincidence came to light during Veikkaus’ congratulatory calls to the winners.

“We all know each other,” said the Riihimäki winner. “We used to talk about playing as a group years ago, but someone in the group suggested it might be better to play separately—just in case we ever won.”

That decision paid off. Each walked away with the full €528,000 sum.

The Nurmijärvi winner recalled past mishaps with their self-devised method. “I once forgot to play my numbers, and another time I hit the number next to the usual one by mistake. My friends won €20, but I got nothing,” they said, laughing.

The group members say they plan to use their winnings on investments, home improvements and summer properties. “And of course, we’ll save some,” added one.

The Espoo winner said they’re taking their time before deciding how to spend the money. “I’m thinking I might not need to buy everything I thought I did,” they said.

Despite their financial windfall, the group admitted the win has done little to improve their sleep. “They say money brings peace, but I’ve hardly slept,” the Nurmijärvi winner said.

The trio has met in person since the win and shared thoughts about the life-changing event. “We’ve already had a coffee together,” said the Riihimäki winner.

Veikkaus spokesperson Minna Sundholm confirmed that each winner will be invited to the company’s head office for the traditional celebratory coffee. “It was amazing to call three half-millionaires in one day, and even more surprising to learn they were connected,” she said.

Sundholm added that all three plan to keep playing the lottery in the same way.

This Friday’s Eurojackpot draw offers a top prize of €114 million. If won by a Finnish player, it would be the largest gambling prize in the nation’s history. The current record is held by a €91.9 million win from 2019 in Siilinjärvi, which was shared among a 50-person syndicate.
