Telia experienced a widespread network outage across Finland on Tuesday morning, affecting data connections in both its mobile and fixed-line services.
The disruption began at approximately 9:40 and was gradually resolved shortly after 10:00. According to Timo Launonen, Telia’s communications manager, the incident was caused by an unexpected interruption during scheduled network maintenance.
“An unforeseen break occurred during the upgrade work. Connections are now returning to normal,” Launonen told Iltalehti.
Voice calls and text messages were not affected during the outage. However, the disruption impacted various online services relying on Telia’s infrastructure, including authentication platforms such as Suomi.fi.
Customers reported difficulties accessing websites, apps, and logging into services that require digital identification. Telia’s own website was also briefly offline, regaining functionality around 10:15.
Telia acknowledged the fault publicly via its X (formerly Twitter) account and confirmed that repairs had started shortly after the issue was identified.
The company said the root cause analysis is ongoing and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
“We regret the inconvenience caused by the outage. Our teams responded immediately to restore services,” said Launonen.
According to data from Downdetector, a real-time service outage monitoring platform, reports of problems surged sharply after 9:00. At the peak, the platform recorded over 15,000 notifications of service disruptions related to Telia.
The outage was felt nationwide, with users from various parts of the country contacting media outlets about problems with internet access and service logins. No further incidents were reported after the network stabilised.
