President Alexander Stubb holds weekly discussions with US President Donald Trump, according to a new interview published by the Finnish Defence Forces’ newspaper Ruotuväki.

Stubb said the regular contact is part of efforts to clarify the terms required for peace in Ukraine. He also informs NATO and European Union leaders about the content of these talks and remains in active dialogue with leaders of Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Norway.

“Finland doesn’t need to be at the centre of the peace process. Our goal is to help larger states see the bigger picture,” Stubb said.

The level of access Stubb has developed with Trump is uncommon for a Finnish president. In March, he visited Mar-a-Lago in Florida and played golf with Trump.

According to Peter Rough, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Stubb’s access gives him influence that many other leaders lack.

“Stubb is a crucial channel in conveying messages to other Europeans and Ukraine based on his conversations with Trump. But most important is the time he has spent with the US president and the messages he has successfully conveyed to Washington,” Rough said.
