Strong winds and thunderstorms are forecast to sweep across much of Finland on Saturday, prompting authorities to issue warnings for dangerous weather conditions.

According to Joonas Koskela, meteorologist at Foreca, wind speeds may reach up to 20 metres per second in gusts. The strongest winds are expected on Saturday morning, with risks of trees falling and local damage.

“There could be some power outages in parts of the country,” Koskela said.

Electricity companies, including PKS Sähkönsiirto in North Karelia, have prepared in advance by allocating extra staff, equipment, and materials to address expected faults.

“We are closely monitoring the wind forecasts and adjusting our readiness as needed,” said Juha Sirviö of the power transmission firm in a public statement. “Our principle is to err on the side of caution to ensure effective repairs.”

Authorities have warned the public not to attempt clearing fallen trees or handling damaged power lines, due to the risk of electrocution.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has also extended wind warnings to the Gulf of Finland. Boaters are advised to stay off open waters, particularly in small vessels.

Foreca stated that outdoor events are not under immediate threat, but urged organisers and the public to follow updates as forecasts become more precise. Thunderstorms will likely accompany the winds, bringing heavy, localised rain showers.

In Southern Finland, rain is expected to arrive early Saturday and move northward through the day. Rainfall could vary widely across regions. Some locations may see accumulations of up to 20 millimetres, while neighbouring areas may only receive a few millimetres.

Temperatures on Saturday will range between 10 and 15°C in rain-affected regions, while sunnier parts of the country may reach up to 20°C.

On Sunday, the storm system is forecast to shift northward to Lapland, Kainuu, and North Ostrobothnia. Wind conditions are expected to calm in the south.

The southern half of Finland will see dry and mostly sunny weather on Sunday, with temperatures climbing close to 20°C. In the north, the temperature is likely to remain between 10 and 15°C, with cloudier conditions.
