Finland’s state railway company VR has confirmed that while night trains are nearly full, there is still good availability on day trains during the upcoming Easter holiday.
Thursday 17 April is expected to be the busiest outbound travel day, especially on routes from southern Finland to northern destinations. Return traffic will peak on Monday 21 April as holidaymakers head south. Northbound services to Lapland remain popular, but daytime departures still have space across most routes.
“Berths and car spaces on night trains have once again been in high demand. Many want to enjoy the last snow after a mild winter, and taking the train is both convenient and climate-friendly,” said Piia Tyynilä, director of long-distance services at VR.
Tyynilä noted that passengers travelling without a car can book a seat on a connecting bus as part of the same ticket. This makes it easier to reach nature sites and ski resorts beyond the main rail network. Day trains are also a practical option for short trips to nearby cities or visiting relatives.
Tickets for VR’s long-distance connecting buses can be purchased via the VR.fi website alongside train tickets. Customers can search for their destination directly from their departure station and receive the best train and bus combination in one booking.
Passenger numbers for this Easter are expected to exceed those of 2024.
To mark the start of the holiday rush, VR will host an event at Helsinki Central Station on Thursday 17 April from 14:00 to 18:00. Travellers on long-distance services that day may also find chocolate surprises hidden on board by the “Easter Bunny.”
