President Sauli Niinistö and his spouse, Jenni Haukio, will pay an official visit to Germany on November 15–16, 2023.

President Niinistö Began a Two-day Visit to Germany

The visit, which begins on Wednesday, will be hosted by the president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and his spouse, Elke Büdenbender.

President Niinistö and his German counterpart will hold formal talks today, at the official residence of the Federal President, Villa Hammerschmidt, in Bonn. They will discuss bilateral relations between Finland and Germany, security in Europe and the strain on the multilateral rules-based system.

Later on Wednesday, the presidents will discuss security issues with foreign and security policy experts and academics. The program will continue with a visit to the Old Town of Bonn and will conclude with a dinner hosted by the German president and his spouse.


On Thursday, President Niinistö and President Steinmeier will visit the Federal Ministry of Defense, where they will be introduced to modern defense technologies. The presidential couple will then visit the old town of Unkel.

In addition to the joint program, Jenni Haukio and Elke Büdenbender will visit the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and a local UNICEF Children’s Rights School, where they will attend a session of the Children’s Parliament and meet with students.

President Niinistö previously visited Germany in February 2023 to attend the Munich Security Conference. German President Steinmeier last visited Finland in 2022.
