A police strike began today, 15th of April, in Western Uusimaa, shutting down stations and halting most non-urgent operations, after salary talks failed to reach agreement.

Police units will respond only to urgent calls involving threats to life or health. The strike, which continues through Wednesday, also affects the prisons in Hämeenlinna and Vantaa, where only food services and healthcare are being provided.

The Espoo main police station and those in Kirkkonummi, Lohja and Raasepori are closed to the public during the strike days. Crime reports will not be accepted in person at any Western Uusimaa police stations but can be filed online or at other police stations in Finland.

Permit services are also suspended. Individuals with appointments to apply for passports, ID cards, firearm licences or private security permits on Tuesday or Wednesday will not be served. Those needing to present firearms for inspection must reschedule. Urgent permit services can still be accessed at other police departments.

Lost property services and applications for asylum or temporary protection are also suspended in Western Uusimaa during the strike. Applications can be submitted at other police locations.

Emergency calls to 112 remain available for life-threatening situations. According to the National Police Board, investigations into serious crimes affecting life or health will continue during the strike.

The Police Board, Western Uusimaa Police Department, and the Finnish Police Union have agreed on minimum protective duties for the strike period. Units will only respond to tasks necessary to prevent immediate danger to life or serious damage to property. Support from nearby departments is limited to these duties.

At Hämeenlinna and Vantaa prisons, authorities expect that inmates will not be allowed to exercise outdoors, participate in scheduled activities or make outside contacts during the strike. The Criminal Sanctions Agency also anticipates disruptions to prisoner transport and some court proceedings.
