Police in northern Finland detained two young drivers on Thursday in separate high-speed incidents that led to suspicions of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.
The first case occurred at around 5pm when a motorcycle patrol officer spotted a motorcyclist travelling well above the speed limit in the municipality of Iis, located north of Oulu.
Police said the motorcyclist accelerated to speeds exceeding 220 km/h after noticing the officer. The rider turned southbound onto an older motorway and attempted to flee.
Authorities reported that several dangerous situations occurred during the pursuit, but the motorcyclist initially managed to escape. Tips from members of the public later led police to the suspect, identified as an 18-year-old foreign man. He was detained and is suspected of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.
Later the same evening, at around 9pm, police caught a second speeding vehicle on highway 4, just north of Oulu.
A passenger car with foreign plates was clocked at an average speed of 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The high-speed stretch lasted for just over three kilometres, according to police.
The 19-year-old foreign driver was also detained on suspicion of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.
Both investigations are ongoing.
