Police shot and killed a man in the Alppiharju district of Helsinki on Saturday morning after he refused to drop a knife and advanced toward officers, according to a statement by the Helsinki Police Department.
Officers received a call before 10 a.m. reporting a man carrying a knife in the stairwell of a residential building on Kinaporinkatu. When police arrived, the man fled to the roof of the building.
Police said the man behaved in a threatening manner and ignored repeated commands to disarm and surrender.
According to the statement, the man moved toward officers with the knife in hand. Officers used a stun gun to stop him, but it had no effect. As the man continued approaching with the weapon, police fired their service weapon.
The man died at the scene.
One police car and an ambulance were observed at the location around 1 p.m., according to a Helsingin Sanomat reporter at the site.
Lili Schatz from the Helsinki police command centre told Helsingin Sanomat shortly before 1:30 p.m. that the situation was under control and police had begun investigative procedures at the scene.
Under Finnish law, whenever police use a firearm, the case is automatically referred to the prosecution authority for an independent preliminary investigation.
The police confirmed that the investigation is at an early stage and provided no further details. The responsibility for determining whether the use of force was legally justified now rests with a prosecutor-appointed lead investigator.
