Police are searching for a 19-year-old man suspected of murder in Mikkeli and a serious assault in Jyväskylä. The suspect, who remains at large, is believed to have stolen a taxi and used it to travel between the two cities on Sunday.
The body of a woman in her sixties was found inside a burned-down building in the Otava area of Mikkeli. The fire, reported early Sunday morning, is now being investigated as part of a murder case. Authorities have not confirmed whether the victim was killed before the fire or what relationship, if any, existed between her and the suspect.
According to Ilta-Sanomat, the man had no previous convictions and resides in the Huhtasuo district of Jyväskylä. The suspect had previously appeared in court only as a victim in an unrelated case involving threats.

Earlier on Sunday, the suspect allegedly attacked a taxi driver in Jyväskylä. The driver suffered serious injuries and required hospital treatment but was not in life-threatening condition. After the attack, the suspect reportedly fled the scene in the stolen taxi, which was later found near the murder site in Mikkeli.
Later the same day, police reported that a green Citroën C3 Picasso belonging to the victim had also been stolen and later recovered near Mikkeli following a public tip-off. The vehicle is now in police custody. The authorities have not released the exact location where it was found.
The suspect is also linked to the Finnish Defence Forces. According to Iltalehti, he was performing military service at the Kainuu Brigade and failed to return from leave. Police confirmed they conducted searches at the brigade’s premises on Monday but declined to comment on the suspect’s service status or role at the garrison.
Detective Inspector Marfa Raipela, who is leading the investigation, confirmed police have carried out checks and searches across multiple locations in Finland related to the case. She declined to provide further details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and the suspect’s continued evasion.
The earlier head of the investigation, Chief Detective Inspector Tuomo Lepola, said police are actively pursuing leads in the Kainuu region. He urged the public to report any sightings or information about the suspect’s past or current whereabouts. “We have certain assumptions about the connection between the suspect and the victim, but I cannot disclose more at this stage,” he said.
Authorities have issued public warnings not to approach the suspect due to the nature of the crimes. The police stress that any sightings should be reported immediately to emergency services.
