Finland is gearing up for the Taitaja2024 semifinals, a prestigious national vocational skills competition, set to take place from January 29 to February 2, 2024. Over 1,900 vocational students from across the country will compete in various trades, vying for a spot in the grand finale in Kuopio in May.
The Taitaja event, often referred to as the Skills Championships of Finland, showcases the talents of young students training in various vocational fields.
The semifinals, held in over 40 locations nationwide, serve as a qualifying round for the final competition. Only the top eight competitors in each field will advance to the final event in Kuopio, scheduled for May 20-23, 2024.
The Taitaja2024 finals in Kuopio will feature approximately 500 students competing in 50 different skills categories. These categories span a wide range of industries including construction, catering services, automotive and transportation technology, manufacturing, service sectors, and information and communication technology. The event also includes TaitajaPLUS categories, where students requiring special support compete for national titles in their respective fields. Additionally, the Taitaja9 finals, a craftsmanship competition for upper secondary school students, will be part of the event.
Petteri Makkonen, the competition director of Taitaja2024, expressed his pride in the record number of participants in the semifinals. “We are thrilled to have such a high turnout for the Taitaja semifinals,” he said.
The Taitaja2024 Kuopio event will be hosted at the Savon Vocational College’s Savilahti campus and the Kuopio Hall, with additional venues including the Ylä-Savo Vocational College in Kiuruvesi and Peltosalmi, and the South Savo Vocational College in Mikkeli.
Open to the public and free of charge, the Taitaja event is Finland’s largest annual vocational education event. The patron of the Taitaja2024 Kuopio event is Jere Räisänen, entrepreneur of Elcoline Oy and a former Taitaja competitor.
Centered around the theme of sustainable future, Taitaja2024 aims to elevate the importance of vocational skills in Finnish society. The event’s slogan, #YlpeästiAmmattilainen, celebrates the pride in professional craftsmanship and skill.
