				Norovirus outbreak in Finnish Parliament infects dozens

A norovirus outbreak in the Finnish Parliament has led to around 80 confirmed cases of gastroenteritis, with health officials identifying the virus as the cause.

The outbreak prompted an internal directive on 12 March advising staff to work remotely where possible. According to a survey conducted among parliamentary staff, over 240 people responded, with 80 reporting symptoms. Laboratory tests have so far confirmed norovirus in eight cases. Surface sample results are still pending.

Parliamentary administrative director Pertti Rauhio said the outbreak has now subsided, with only two new cases reported over the weekend.

Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads through contaminated surfaces, food, or close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms typically include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever, lasting between 12 and 72 hours.

Authorities are investigating whether the outbreak is linked to meals served at the Parliament’s Pikku Parlamentti restaurant. Officials urge anyone who dined there or fell ill to complete the ongoing survey to determine potential
