Mellunmäki in eastern Helsinki is set for a major redevelopment, with plans for a new public transport hub, retail spaces, and housing for 800 residents.
The area around Mellunmäki metro station will be transformed into a dense, multifunctional district. A new zoning plan will enable improved services and new housing, including owner-occupied, rental, student, and senior apartments.
The project will require the demolition of the current K-Supermarket Masin building and a student housing complex. Additional housing will be built on land currently used for parking, with future parking spaces relocated to underground facilities.
Plans also include two supermarkets, a smaller grocery store, and street-level retail spaces, doubling the current commercial area. A private daycare centre is also being considered.
Transport routes to be redesigned
Traffic arrangements will be completely restructured to accommodate new developments. The existing street and square network will be rebuilt, with the aim of improving public transport connections.
A key feature of the plan is the extension of a light rail line from Vantaa, expected to be completed by 2029. A new tram terminal and bus hub will be built near the metro station. A dedicated public transport corridor will run from Pallaksentie through Hetanaukio to Länsimäentie.
Changes to Länsimäentie and Mellunmäentie will remove existing underpasses and replace them with traffic-light-controlled intersections. The Aarteenetsijänsilta pedestrian bridge will also be dismantled to make way for the new bus terminal.
Planners are also exploring ways to improve public spaces. One proposal is to bring Mellunkylänpuro stream back to the surface, as it currently runs underground beneath the area.
Public feedback open until March
Residents can review and comment on the plans via the city’s Kerrokantasi platform until 30 March 2025.
A guided walk-through of the redevelopment area will take place on 20 March at 17:00, starting from Hetanaukio near the metro entrance.
A formal zoning proposal is expected to be presented to the Helsinki Urban Environment Committee in late 2025. Construction could begin in 2027.
