An overwhelming majority of Finns believe in the necessity of setting limitations on wars and armed conflicts, according to a recent survey conducted by the Finnish Red Cross.

The survey, carried out by research firm Verian, revealed that 88% of the Finnish population still consider it essential to impose restrictions on warfare.

The findings underscore a broad consensus on the importance of maintaining humanitarian standards during conflicts.

“People want rules in war to ensure everyone is treated humanely,” said Jani Leino, Legal Advisor for the Finnish Red Cross.

The survey further found that 76% of respondents believe that combatants should avoid civilian casualties as much as possible, even if this makes achieving military objectives more challenging.

Geneva Conventions at 75

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, established on August 12, 1949. These international treaties set the legal standards for humanitarian treatment during war, aiming to alleviate and prevent human suffering.

“The agreements on protecting civilians during wars were made 75 years ago in the aftermath of World War II’s horrors. Those who do not take part in military conflicts must be respected, protected, and treated humanely. This issue remains unfortunately relevant today. It is crucial that we have international laws for war,” emphasized Leino.

The rules of war establish minimum standards to be followed in conflicts to protect human dignity and minimize suffering.

“International humanitarian law protects all war victims, including both combatants and civilians, regardless of their side in the conflict. Every human life is equally valuable,” Leino reminded.
