Finland experienced its coldest temperature of the winter early Wednesday morning, as the Tulppio weather station in eastern Lapland recorded a frigid -38.9°C. The reading, taken at 3:40am, marks the lowest temperature registered in the country so far this season.
The Tulppio station previously held this winter’s cold record of -38.2°C, recorded on 16 December.
Although the day began with freezing temperatures in Lapland, conditions are expected to moderate slightly, with temperatures rising to between -15°C and -20°C during the day.
Elsewhere in Finland, the weather remains varied. Southern regions can anticipate temperatures as mild as +3°C, while central areas will experience cooler conditions of about -8°C.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued warnings for hazardous driving conditions in eastern Finland, where snowfall could reach up to 10 centimetres on Wednesday.
