The demand for holiday homes in Finland continues to grow, with Lapland emerging as the biggest trend. Searches for cottages in Lapland have increased compared to last year, making it the fourth most popular region for holiday home buyers. Meanwhile, Pirkanmaa has seen a decline in interest, and South Savo has dropped out of the top ten most sought-after cottage regions.
Holiday home sales were 15% higher in 2024 compared to 2023, with total market value increasing by over 16% to nearly €460 million.
Despite the post-pandemic market stabilisation, demand remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels.
Lapland’s growing appeal is reflected in the 10% decline in available holiday homes for sale over the past year. The region’s tourism industry has experienced record growth, and Rovaniemi Airport is now one of Finland’s busiest. The increasing demand for rental cabins has also influenced the rise in Lapland’s holiday home market.
Anna Leinonen, director at Oikotie Asunnot, notes that Lapland has overtaken Pirkanmaa and Kanta-Häme in desirability.
“Lapland has become an international tourism trend, which is evident in the rental market and now also in property sales,” Leinonen said.
Oikotie’s latest search data shows that Varsinais-Suomi, Uusimaa, and Päijät-Häme remain the top three most searched regions for holiday homes. Lapland has climbed to fourth place, ahead of Pirkanmaa, which has slipped in popularity.
South Savo, traditionally a stronghold of Finnish cottage culture, has seen its ranking fall dramatically. In early 2023, it was the seventh most searched region for holiday homes, but in 2024, it has dropped out of the top ten.
On the other hand, North Savo and North Karelia have gained traction, appearing in the top ten after years of lower interest.
“This could signal a broader revival of interest in Eastern Finland’s holiday homes,” Leinonen said. “With demand concentrated in southern regions for several years, buyers may now be looking at a wider range of locations.”
