The number of employees in Finnish companies continued to fall in June, according to new figures from pension provider Ilmarinen. Compared to the same period last year, overall employment dropped by 2.1 percent.
The decline marks the 23rd consecutive month of falling employment numbers, based on Ilmarinen’s business cycle index. The index tracks trends across 60,000 companies and ten major industries, covering a large share of Finland’s private sector.
These firms collectively employ around half a million people.
The largest drops were seen in sectors where women make up the majority of the workforce. These include healthcare and social services, along with accommodation and food services.
Employment in the construction sector also continued to weaken. In June, the number of workers in construction was 3.8 percent lower than the year before.
Ilmarinen’s data suggest that workforce reduction is no longer limited to cyclical or seasonal changes but reflects broader structural challenges in several sectors.
