As part of the Oulu2026 cultural program, renowned Italian artist Fabio Petani has been selected to create a large-scale mural in Myllyoja, Oulu, this summer. Petani, chosen from 479 applicants across Europe, draws inspiration from local nature for his work, which will adorn the side of a six-story building at Karvarinaukio 12.

The mural, set to be completed in August, is the third in a series of public art projects under the Oulu2026 initiative.

This annual series features murals created by international artists in different neighborhoods of Oulu, with the final piece set to be unveiled in the city center during Oulu’s year as the European Capital of Culture in 2026.

Petani, who specializes in plant-themed art, was selected by a panel of public art professionals for his distinctive and original style. The artist arrived in Oulu at the beginning of August and has since been immersing himself in the local environment, even participating in a community day trip to Hailuoto organized by the Myllyoja residents’ association.

“My aim is to create a work that reflects the spirit of Oulu,” Petani explains. “I’ve explored the city’s history and culture, with a particular focus on the diversity of the local flora, which serves as the foundation for my artistic work. The mural will combine plant elements with cultural symbolism.”

Petani is committed to making art accessible to everyone and transforming everyday spaces into unique visual experiences. “I want to create a mural that the local residents can take pride in, one that fosters a sense of community and celebrates the harmonious relationship between humans and the environment,” he adds.

Born in 1987, Fabio Petani is known for his art that explores the relationship between nature and humanity, characterized by a blend of harmony and disruption. His work can be seen not only in public spaces across Italy and Europe but also in galleries.

The selection of Petani was made by a professional jury that included visual artist Minna Kangasmaa, Oulu Art Museum curator Katariina Kemppainen, Oulu Cultural Foundation producer Inka Hyvönen, and Upeart art coordinator Yiorgos Slunga.

The locations for the Oulu2026 murals are chosen through annual neighborhood voting, open to all residents of Oulu. Previous murals were completed in Rajakylä in 2022 by British artist Eloise Gillow and in Tuiran in 2023 by Canadian artist Ilana Pichon. In 2026, during Oulu’s European Capital of Culture year, the final mural will be created in the city center, accompanied by various activities such as art tours and competitions. Upon completion, these murals will become part of the Oulu Art Museum’s collection.

As the European Capital of Culture in 2026, Oulu and Northern Finland will host a wide array of cultural events, art, and festivities, bringing international attention to the region. This cultural journey will culminate in a grand celebration in 2026, marking a significant moment for the region on the global stage.
