Helsinki’s tram network is reducing energy use and heating costs by reusing braking energy to warm passenger compartments during cold weather, according to public transport operator Kaupunkiliikenne Oy.
The system, in use since 2013, captures energy produced when trams brake, stores it, and converts it into heat.
In winter, this energy is redirected into the passenger area, covering up to 85% of the heating demand per tram.
