				Greenpeace stages protest from Helsinki Central Station clock tower

Greenpeace activists climbed the clock tower of Helsinki Central Railway Station on Wednesday morning and unfurled a nine-metre-long banner reading “Time to resist” in English.

The protest began around 8:00am. Activists accessed the tower using scaffolding set up for ongoing renovation work. The action was part of Greenpeace’s global campaign denouncing corporate influence, environmental degradation, and alleged political inaction.

In a statement released by Greenpeace Finland, the group said it intended to stay in the tower throughout the morning. Another group remained at ground level, handing out leaflets to explain the message behind the demonstration.

Police arrived at the site at approximately 9:30am. The activists voluntarily removed the banner and descended without incident.

The “Time to Resist” campaign focuses on what Greenpeace calls a growing global threat to democracy, environmental policy, and civil liberties. According to the group, wealthy corporate leaders and governments are increasingly using legal and political tools to suppress environmental movements.

“There is a fierce attack on democracy, freedom of speech and nature,” Oona Poranen, an activist with Greenpeace Finland, stated in the release. “Rich corporate leaders, the US administration and even the energy minister and state gas company of EU member Romania are attacking environmental activists. At the same time, in Finland, political decision-makers care little about science-based decision-making, which right now seems to be leading to the logging of natural forests.”

The statement referenced environmental policy decisions in Finland, accusing lawmakers of ignoring scientific recommendations. Greenpeace claims that this disregard has contributed to the continued logging of old-growth forests and weakened national climate commitments.
