Visitors to Helsinki Zoo will encounter metre-high bugs from June as part of a new exhibition titled Suurenmoiset ötökät, which opens at Korkeasaari in early summer and runs through October.
The exhibition features more than 20 species of insects and arachnids, enlarged up to 100 times their actual size. The largest model is a four-metre-wide solifuge, also known as a camel spider. Other familiar species include butterflies, ants, crickets, bumblebees, and several human parasites.
The models are presented by the Swedish group Megalodon Creations and this is the first time the travelling exhibition appears in Finland.
Most of the insects on display are designed to move or produce sound. The display aims to draw attention to the biological functions of these species, including pollination, decomposition, and their role as a food
