PARTS of Central and Southern Finland will wake up to see first snow on the ground on Friday, reports STT.

“Some areas may get up to 15 to 20 centimetres of snow. Even though the warm ground will melt the snow quickly, some of it could stay on the ground,” Jani Sorsa, a meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, stated to the news agency on Thursday.

Temperatures in Finland, he added, should hover closer to seasonal averages in the coming days, after an unusually warm autumn. On Friday, the mercury is forecast to hover only a couple of degrees above freezing point in southern parts of the country and remain a few degrees below freezing point in central and northern parts of the country.

FMI also urged motorists to prepare for challenging road conditions, including by changing to winter tyres without delay.

On Friday, motorists should prepare for hazardous conditions in Kymenlaakso and Päijät-Häme and for potentially hazardous conditions in Central Finland, Kanta-Häme, Pirkanmaa, Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia, Southern Karelia and Southern Savonia. On Sunday, road conditions are forecast to be hazardous across eastern parts of the country, as well as in western parts of North Ostrobothnia and Sodankylä.
