Helsinki’s city centre experienced significant flooding on Monday afternoon as water gushed from storm drains near Lasipalatsi and spread across the streets.
The flooding, centred around the intersection of Mannerheimintie and Postikatu, caused disruptions for pedestrians and vehicles. Witnesses described water flowing “like a river” from the corner of Lasipalatsi towards the Asema Square area. Passers-by were seen wading through ankle-deep water as crossing streets became increasingly difficult.
The worst-affected area was in front of the Sokos department store, where water levels rendered Postikatu nearly impassable. Salomonkatu, near the Amos Rex art museum, was also heavily flooded, with water cascading across Mannerheimintie.
Helsinki’s rescue services were alerted to the scene at 14:35. While there was no immediate danger to nearby properties, the emergency response team handed the situation over to Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) for further management.
The exact cause of the flooding remains unclear. The water appeared to originate from storm drains, but the volume of the discharge left city officials investigating potential blockages or infrastructure issues.
