Finnair will cancel 128 flights on Thursday 19 June due to a four-hour walkout by ground handling and catering staff, as a labour dispute between the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU) and employer group Palta enters its sixth month.
The disruption will affect more than 8,200 passengers, according to the airline. Finnair stated that it is contacting affected customers directly to offer alternative flight arrangements.
The industrial action targets ground service operations and follows a similar strike on Tuesday, which led to the cancellation of more than 140 flights.
Finnair warned of delays in customer service response times due to the high volume of queries caused by the repeated disruptions.
The dispute has seen limited progress in mediation. Talks held on Tuesday at the National Conciliator’s Office ended without agreement. Negotiations between the IAU and Palta are set to resume on Monday.
A new strike warning has also been issued by the aviation union, with a broader work stoppage planned for 2 July. The upcoming action is expected to affect several companies in the aviation sector and further disrupt air traffic across Finland.
In a statement, Finnair said, “Customers whose flight was cancelled due to industrial action will be informed about the cancellation as soon as it has been done. After this, the customer will receive a message and be offered a new route.”
The airline has not indicated how long the labour conflict might continue or what contingency plans are in place if negotiations fail again next week.
