The Research Council of Finland (RCF) is preparing a €50 million funding call to support Finnish universities in hiring international researchers between 2026 and 2030.

The initiative will form part of the RCF’s existing research profiling programme, known as the Profi scheme, which has been in place since 2015. The goal is to help universities strengthen their strategic focus areas and raise the overall quality of research conducted in Finland.

Under the preliminary plan, universities will be able to use the funds to recruit researchers from outside Finland, including from countries such as the United States. The call is expected to open as part of the next round of competitive Profi funding.

According to RCF, the long-term increase in national research and development (R&D) spending up to 2030 is designed to support growth through high-level expertise and innovation. The new funding will be targeted not only at academic research but also at strengthening collaboration between universities and industry, and developing research infrastructure.

RCF said the upcoming call will be specifically tied to the profiling strategies of individual universities. Funds awarded will be used to enhance selected areas of research, in line with each institution’s strengths and long-term objectives.

Strengthening Finland’s research, development and innovation (RDI) system remains a national priority. The recruitment of skilled international researchers is seen as one of the key tools to help Finnish institutions compete globally and address gaps in scientific expertise.

The call is currently in the planning stage, with full details to be announced at a later date.
