The Finnish government will increase the maximum validity of passports from five to ten years.

The decision was made during the cabinet’s mid-term policy session on Wednesday and confirmed in an official statement from the Council of State.

According to the announcement, the new validity period will include exceptions if security-related concerns arise. No specific implementation date has yet been disclosed.

Finnish passports were previously valid for ten years, but the period was halved in 2006 due to concerns about document security. The new reform reverses that change.

The proposal to reintroduce the ten-year term was first raised about a year ago by the parliamentary working group on deregulation, which includes representatives from all government parties.

Passports currently issued by Finland are valid for a maximum of five years. The change will bring Finland into line with several other EU countries, where ten-year validity is already standard for adult passports.
