The Finnish Immigration Service has announced that applications for seasonal work permits are now open for those planning to work in Finland later this year. Migrant workers looking to take part in berry picking or other seasonal jobs must apply for the appropriate permit before arriving in the country.

Seasonal work in Finland includes jobs in agriculture, forestry, and tourism, with employment lasting up to nine months within a 12-month period.

The type of permit required depends on the duration of employment.

Those working for less than three months must apply for a seasonal work visa at a Finnish embassy if they come from a country requiring a visa. Applicants from visa-free countries can instead apply for a certificate for seasonal work from the Finnish Immigration Service.

For employment lasting between three and nine months, workers must apply for a residence permit for seasonal work before arriving in Finland. The processing time for all permits is up to 90 days.

Applicants must secure a job before applying and provide a signed contract with a Finnish employer. Wages must meet the minimum requirement of €1,430 per month unless a collective agreement states otherwise. Workers must also arrange accommodation that meets Finnish health and safety standards.

Recent legislative changes now require foreign wild-berry pickers to have formal employment contracts. This measure aims to prevent exploitation and ensure fair working conditions.

The Finnish government will monitor the impact of these changes and may introduce further measures to regulate the sector.
