Finland will require over 31,000 additional practical nurses by 2040 to address the demands of an ageing population, according to a recent government-commissioned report. The healthcare sector will also need nearly 14,000 more registered nurses, with many of them employed in specialised care.

The report highlights the urgent need for healthcare professionals, with an estimated 20,000 additional registered and practical nurses required by the end of this decade alone.

In 2019, Finland had approximately 71,000 practical nurses, but that figure must increase substantially to meet the growing care demands of the elderly.

The findings align with the latest statistics from Statistics Finland, which reveal a record-low birth rate for the third consecutive year in 2024. The decline underscores the demographic challenge Finland faces as its population continues to age.

Despite the falling birth rate, Finland’s population grew by over 33,000 people in 2024, reaching 5.64 million by the end of December. The growth was driven primarily by net immigration, as the number of individuals moving to Finland from abroad outpaced those emigrating.
