Finland supports the European Commission’s proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, Environment and Climate Minister Sari Multala said on Monday.
The target is part of the European Union’s roadmap to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Multala said the proposed 2040 target aligns with Finland’s diplomatic priorities on climate policy.
“A long-term and consistent climate policy is important for the EU’s competitiveness and creates stability for companies to invest in clean solutions,” she stated.
The government will finalise its official stance and send a communication to Parliament by early September.
Multala said that implementing the emissions target must consider uncertainties in the land use sector. She also emphasised a technology-neutral approach, meaning no technologies will be prioritised or ruled out in advance.
