Support for Finland recognising the State of Palestine has declined in the past year, according to a survey conducted by Tietoykkönen for the Uutissuomalainen news group.
Thirty-seven percent of respondents said Finland should recognise Palestine. This represents a drop from 41 percent recorded in a similar survey one year earlier.
The number of people opposing recognition has increased. Last year, 17 percent were against it. This year, the figure rose to 26 percent.
The survey also showed a significant gender divide. Forty-two percent of women supported recognition, while only 33 percent of men agreed. Eleven percent of women opposed recognition. Among men, the opposition rate was 41 percent.
Palestine is recognised as a state by 147 of the 193 United Nations member countries. Sweden and Norway are among the Nordic countries that have granted recognition.
Finnish politicians have maintained that Finland will recognise Palestine “when the time is right”. No formal timeline has been presented.
The number of respondents who declined to state a view fell slightly.
The data was gathered in June and included responses from 1,000 people. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
Protests in support of Palestinians have continued in Finland since the start of the war in Gaza. Demonstrators gathered in Helsinki again on 28 June, waving Palestinian flags and demanding stronger Finnish support for Palestinian rights.
