Environmental movement Elokapina resumed its protests in Helsinki on Tuesday, launching two separate marches from opposite parts of the city. Both processions are headed toward Parliament House as the group maintains pressure on the government to end subsidies it views as environmentally damaging.
One march began at Dallapénpuisto, proceeding down Mäkelänkatu. At the same time, a parallel protest set off from Senate Square. The routes had been submitted to police in advance, according to the organisers.
The coordinated action follows Monday’s demonstrations, which caused major traffic disruption in central Helsinki. Police detained more than 160 protesters, eight of whom were under 18. The detentions were based on charges of disobedience.
The Border Guard assisted police operations on Monday, a response partly prompted by the limited availability of officers due to security commitments for a World Cup qualifying football match scheduled in Helsinki on Tuesday evening.
Police justified the call for support by citing the need to maintain public order and security across the capital.
Elokapina has said it plans to continue protests until Wednesday. In a statement, the group stressed it is not seeking confrontation with law enforcement. Instead, it aims to apply pressure on political institutions by testing the limits of police detention capacity.
The group’s demands include ending state support for activities deemed harmful to the climate. It argues that the government is failing to act with the urgency required to address the climate crisis.
