More than 60 candidates from the Finns Party signed supporter cards for the openly fascist Blue-Black Movement, helping it return to Finland’s official party register, according to a report by Helsingin Sanomat.
The movement, which was struck from the register in a previous attempt due to its original programme violating constitutional and human rights law, secured 5,819 verified supporter cards last month. This surpassed the 5,000 threshold required for re-registration as a political party.
Of the signatories, 117 had stood as candidates in recent municipal elections. Among them, 63 represented the Finns Party, six ran with the National Coalition Party, and another six with the Centre Party. Nine were successfully elected, five under the Finns Party, and two each from the Centre and NCP.
The list of names was published on Tuesday, revealing that the movement has support not only from fringe activists but also from individuals active in mainstream party politics.
The Blue-Black Movement’s updated platform promotes a monolingual Finland and opposes what it calls the “dominance of foreign languages.” It also commits to protecting the domestic labour market from “foreign and external competition.”
Data released from the supporter list show that most backers were young men. Of the 5,819 signatories, 85 percent were male. The largest age group was 21–25 years, followed closely by those aged 26–30.
The movement was founded in 2021 by former members of the Finns Party who identified with ethnonationalist ideals. Its name and visual symbolism are rooted in the Lapua Movement, a radical far-right group active in Finland during the early 1930s. The Lapua Movement collapsed after a failed coup in 1932, and many of its members later joined the Patriotic People’s Movement (IKL), a fascist party that operated until it was banned in 1944 as part of Finland’s post-war obligations to the Soviet Union.
