Finnish Customs has intercepted a shipment of five kilograms of cocaine smuggled from the United States. The drugs, with an estimated street value of at least one million euros, were intended for distribution in Eastern and Central Finland.

In July 2024, Customs seized a parcel from the US containing three kilograms of cocaine. The package was addressed to a man living in North Karelia.

– The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had received a similar package earlier, which is believed to have contained two kilos of cocaine, said lead investigator Marko Laitinen.

The seized cocaine was highly potent, with a purity level of 90 per cent. Authorities estimate that the shipment could have been processed into 60,000 street doses.

– Our investigation indicates that the narcotics were mainly distributed in North and South Karelia, as well as Central Finland, Laitinen added.

The case also involves standard narcotics offences and a firearm offence.

In 2024, Finnish Customs seized a total of 53 kilograms of cocaine, a sharp increase from 16 kilos in 2023. The preliminary investigation was conducted in cooperation with the Eastern Finland Police Department.

Criminal charges are now under consideration.
