Counterfeit euro notes detected in Finland show slight increase in 2023

In Finland, the detection of counterfeit euro banknotes experienced a slight uptick during the year 2023, with authorities identifying 653 forgeries in circulation. This represents a modest increase from the 469 counterfeits found in the previous year, indicating a continued vigilance in the fight against fake currency but still within the range Finland is accustomed to.

The majority of the counterfeits detected were 20-euro notes, which accounted for a total of 364 instances.

This was followed by 50-euro notes, with 149 cases, and 80 instances of counterfeit 10-euro notes. Despite the increase, the numbers remain relatively low and manageable within the context of Finland’s monetary system.

Olli Vehmas, a banknote expert at the Bank of Finland, commented on the findings, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the security features of banknotes. “The number of counterfeits found in circulation in 2023 was slightly higher than the previous year, yet it’s roughly what we’ve come to expect annually in Finland. It’s crucial to remember that whenever handling banknotes, one should always check their security features,” Vehmas stated.

Euro banknotes are equipped with several security features that make it possible to verify their authenticity. Simple tests, such as feeling the banknote’s print, looking at it against the light, and tilting it, can help determine whether a note is genuine. If there’s uncertainty about a note’s authenticity, comparing it to one that is known to be real is advised. The Bank of Finland’s website offers guidelines and tutorials on how to check for the authenticity of banknotes (www.suomenpankki.fi > Money and Payments).

Furthermore, the Bank of Finland has introduced an online banknote course available to the public. This course provides an opportunity to learn about the security features of euro banknotes and how to act in situations where a counterfeit is suspected. The course can be found at setelikurssi.suomenpankki.fi.

In related news, the European Central Bank released a statement today (www.ecb.europa.eu) regarding the overall situation of euro banknote counterfeiting, highlighting the continuous effort required to maintain the integrity of the euro currency across the European Union.
