With contactless payment, you can buy HSL adult single tickets: first, select the travel zones on the reader’s screen, then tap your bank or credit card on the reader.

Passengers can now pay for tickets using contactless payment on all Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL) services, including buses, commuter trains, trams, the metro, and the Suomenlinna ferry.

With the expanded system, a single contactless ticket can be used across all HSL vehicles, including the blue buses that were previously excluded.

Passengers can purchase adult single tickets by selecting travel zones on the reader’s screen and tapping a Visa or Mastercard, or using Google Pay or Apple Pay. No physical ticket is printed—the payment card or mobile device serves as the ticket and is presented to inspectors when required. Inspectors can only see ticket-related details, ensuring privacy.

Vesa Suomalainen, project director at HSL, said the rollout marks a major step forward. “This has been a long-awaited update, and now it’s here! Everything went smoothly in the trial phase, and now passengers can also use contactless payment on blue buses,” he said.

Suomalainen highlighted the benefits for occasional travellers and tourists who do not use the HSL app or travel card. “A bank card is something people always have with them. No registration is needed—just hop on and buy a ticket at the reader. It’s fast and effortless,” he said.

The contactless payment system is part of a broader update to HSL’s ticketing and background systems. The new system aims to expand digital and self-service options while enabling faster development of future transport services.
