A serious traffic accident occurred early Saturday morning in Helsinki’s Kumpula district when a car crashed into a pole and broke into two pieces.

The accident took place at the intersection of Väinö Auerin katu and Kustaa Vaasan tie shortly before 8 a.m. Emergency services confirmed that the driver, who was alone in the car, was seriously injured and transported to hospital. No bystanders were harmed.

According to the police, the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed before it veered off the road and struck the pole. The impact was so violent that the car split apart, scattering debris across the scene.

“There is a lot of wreckage to clear,” said Juha Haapalainen, chief inspector from the Helsinki Police Department. He added that preliminary investigations suggest aggravated endangerment of traffic safety due to excessive speeding.

Initial reports speculated that two cars were involved, but police later confirmed that only one car was in the crash. The heavy damage had caused confusion, making it appear as if multiple vehicles had been involved.

Rescue operations began immediately after the alarm was raised at 7:44 a.m. Witnesses reported that several bystanders attempted to assist before emergency crews arrived.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact speed of the vehicle, but Haapalainen noted that the speed limit in the area is 60 kilometres per hour, with some sections having even lower limits.

Police directed traffic during the clean-up, and normal traffic flow was expected to resume later in the morning once the debris was cleared.
