The 10th International Alvar Aalto Design Seminar will take place on 10 June 2025 at the University of Jyväskylä, focusing on how design is evolving in a rapidly changing world.
The event, titled Checkpoint, will examine themes of authenticity, cohabitation, and evolution. Discussions will address the impact of artificial intelligence on human-centred design, craftsmanship, and sustainable development.
Speakers include Ineke Hans, Professor of Design & Social Context at UdK-Berlin; Ann Light, Design Professor at the University of Sussex and Malmö University; Zeynep Falay Von Flittner, design lead and entrepreneur at Falay Transition Design; Kaisu Savola, design historian and curator at Aalto University; Harri Koskinen, industrial designer and head of Friends of Industry Ltd.; and Hanna Neuvo, CEO of FYRA Design Agency.
The seminar will be held in English and streamed globally. Virtual participation is free, with recordings available until the end of September for registered attendees.
A side programme on 10–11 June will celebrate design heritage, marking the 90th anniversary of Artek. Thirteen Aalto buildings have been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2026. Events include a lecture on Artek’s history by Timo Penttilä and Antti Tevajärvi at the Aalto2 Museum Centre, guided tours of Aalto’s architectural sites, and a bus tour from Jyväskylä to Noormarkku and Paimio.
