State-owned alcohol retailer Alko has started a trial programme offering discounts on soon-to-expire beverages in three Tampere stores.

The trial, which began on Monday, is being run at the Kaleva, Turtola and Tammela outlets. Alko has traditionally offered clearance sales for seasonal products like Christmas beers and glögg, but this new trial extends the approach to other products with an alcohol content of up to 8 percent.

Products nearing their expiration date will be marked with a -20 percent discount sticker. The discount applies only to in-store purchases.

Alko’s Head of Category Development Ari Hyvönen said in a statement that the initiative is aimed at reducing waste and its associated environmental impact.

“Most of the environmental impact of beer comes from primary production, particularly water use,” Hyvönen said.

A litre of beer requires up to 298 litres of fresh water over its production, transport and consumption cycle. By cutting beer waste in half, Alko estimates it could save the equivalent of six million litres of water annually — about two Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Alko plans to expand the trial to additional shops in Tampere later next month. A decision on whether to introduce the model across Alko’s entire network of 369 stores is expected in May.

The retailer said the new model will help meet sustainability goals while offering customers lower prices on still-consumable products.
